Marisa McCarthy Jewelry is a one-woman jewelry brand based in Massachusetts. Each item is fabricated by hand with great care and attention to detail with consciously sourced materials. All items are made to order and many have custom sizing options to ensure that your jewelry is made to fit you perfectly. Made in Sterling Silver and brass, our jewelry is made to be durable and sustainable for comfortable daily wear. By utilizing the lost-wax casting method, we sustain ancient jewelry making techniques, continuing metalsmithing traditions while creating modern pieces. Rooted in the artist's Spanish and Indian heritage, these pieces reflect the preservation and transformation of traditional adornments over time.

About the Artist

Marisa McCarthy is a painter and jeweler living and working in Massachusetts. She received a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and a BA in Environmental Studies from Tufts University in 2024. Her practice approaches art-making as ethnography, depicting family histories through painting and creating cultural objects and adornments. McCarthy’s work often deals with themes of hybrid identity and preservation, linking imagery across time and planes of reality. She is interested in cultural connections to the environment and the practice of archiving as ritual. For paintings and more, visit Marisamccarthy.com.

FAQs

How should I care for my jewelry?

Our jewelry is designed for daily wear. Our pieces do not use plating so there is no concern about color changes over time. Some tarnishing and scratches are normal with wear, but there are easy practices to keep your pieces looking new for years to come.

Routine: Last on, first off. In the morning, wear your jewelry as the final step of getting ready. At the end of the day, take it off before your usual night-time routine. This avoids contact with lotions, perfumes, etc. We recommend removing your jewelry before showering and swimming to avoid product buildup and risk of losing the jewelry. We recommend avoiding exposure to soaps and hand sanitizers.

Storing: Keep your pieces in an airtight container.

Cleaning: Every couple of months, you can opt to gently clean your pieces with a microfiber or jewelry cleaning specialist cloth. We don’t recommend any other products, polishes, or chemicals.

Lab-grown vs. natural stones?

Let’s be clear- lab grown gemstones are not fake! Lab-grown stones are chemically and physically identical to their natural counterparts. The difference between these stones is their formation processes. Natural stones are formed by heat and pressure underground over millions of years. Lab-grown stones are created in controlled environments that replicate the natural processes in a fraction of the time. Lab-grown stones have the same hardness ratings as natural stones, but because they have fewer inclusions, they can be more durable. Lab-grown stones are created without mining, making them a more sustainable and ethical choice as mining can be very environmentally harmful and ethically exploitative. Only trained gemologists with specialized tools can identify the difference between lab-grown and natural stones. Lab-grown stones are far more affordable than natural stones, making them a great accessible option. Our jewelry uses both natural and lab-grown stones depending on the resources available to us.

Why no gold-plated jewelry?

Gold-plated jewelry consists of a thin plating of gold over a base of cheaper metal (usually copper), underneath. The plating wears off quickly to reveal the copper, degrading the appearance of the jewelry (and turning your skin green from copper oxidation). Gold-plated jewelry encourages overconsumption as it can only be worn a few times before its appearance degrades, leading consumers to buy more cheap jewelry. Additionally, the process of gold-plating jewelry uses cyanide and other harmful chemicals creating toxic waste and byproducts. Gold-plated jewelry that ends up in landfills leaks these chemicals over time, polluting water runoff and contaminating the environment. We work with brass instead of gold-plating because it gives a lustrous yellow-gold appearance while remaining affordable and durable. With proper care, your brass pieces will retain their appearance for a lifetime.
